Education USA is a site set up by the US Department of State. It appears to be more oriented toward international students, but provides some basic college information that could be useful for people who are the first in their family applying to college. There is a student section with links and information on the college application process. There is also an extensive FAQ section.

ESL (English as a Second Language)

There are many requirements for international students looking to study abroad in the United States, but the most important of these is the ability to speak, read, and write English. ESL programs are an invaluable resource in helping international students to develop their English skills.

One great resource for international students of all ages is the ESL section of SOS Classroom, SOS College’s sister site. This site is divided by grade levels, and provides various games and quizzes whose difficulty corresponds to these grade levels. By studying the content available for the upper grade levels, international high school students can prepare themselves for a college education in the United States.  

Another great resource that international students can utilize in learning to understand and speak English is Disney Channel. Although it seems like it is only for children, listening to simple and entertaining shows in English is a great way to gradually pick up the language and have fun at the same time!

How to get your I-20 and Student VISA

In order to get an I-20 (or permit of admission) to the university you’re planning to attend, you must submit your TOEFL test scores. If the University accepts your TOEFL score, they will issue you an I-20.

Go to website of the American embassy in your own country, and then make an appointment for an interview to get an F-1(Student VISA). On the day of your interview, go to the American embassy in your country and show the interviewer the following documents and certifications:

-Visa photo
-transcript and verification of last school
-a copy of the resident registration
-TOEFL score
-school Identification
-sponsor’s document
-bank statement
-tax report
-income statement

If all of your documentation is in order, the consulate will issue you an F-1(Student VISA). You will receive your VISA with your passport by mail within 5 days.

TOEFL General Information

TOEFL test is very important for international students who want to study abroad.

What is the TOEFL?

The TOEFL is Test of English as a Foreign Language. Today TOEFL exam requires IBT (internet-based testing) test.  The IBT test has listening, reading, grammar, speaking, and writing sections. The exam takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes.

How does one register for the test?

There are 3 steps to registering: Select your test location, Create a profile, and Register.
1) Select your test location
Go to and use the drop-down menu to select your location.
2) Create a profile
You have completed three parts of your profile.
3) Register for the TOEFL test

Where and when to take the TOEFL test?

You can choose test location and date anytime around the world.

What should you bring on the test day?

There are just two things you need to bring on the test day:

1) You should bring the valid ID with your name, recent photo and signature.

 2) You should bring your Registration Confirmation with your registration number.

How much should you pay to take the TOEFL test?

The cost is from $150 to $225, but the cost can vary in different locations.

How and when should you get the TOEFL test score?

Your score will be posted online within 2 weeks after your test date. You can check your score in your TOEFL iBT profile. You can get the TOEFL score by mail, and they’re also mailed to the universities or institutions that you have choosen.


  • You should come to the test location at least 30 minutes before the test begins; if you’re late, you won’t be able to take the test.
  • The regular registration deadline is 7 days prior to the test date (not including the day of the test).
